Private Renting

The first step to finding a home is often to look in the local papers and notice boards in newsagents windows and supermarkets where accommodation to let may be advertised. You may find the Surrey Advertiser newspaper website useful for searching for properties www.surreyad.co.uk. There are also many lettings agents who let accommodation in the local area, although some are unwilling to accept people who receive Housing Benefit to help pay the rent. Details of lettings agents can be found in the Yellow Pages and Thompson Local Directory or from the Housing Advice Centre.

If you are currently living in unsuitable accommodation or you are unable to afford a deposit to secure private rented accommodation you may be eligible for assistance under the council’s Homes 4U scheme. Click Private Renting for more information.

Hostels

There are a number of hostels in and around Guildford that offer advice, accommodation and support. The majority of the hostels are long stay where you can live for several months or years. Access to most of these hostels is by Council referral. It may take a few weeks to get into a hostel after a referral, as demand is often high.

If you have nowhere to stay tonight the Number Five nightshelter may be able to help. It is a direct access short stay hostel where homeless people can stay for up to two weeks. You need to go to the nightshelter from 6pm each day to see if there is a vacancy, however places are limited and you may not always be able to get a bed space.

If you have been sleeping rough or have no fixed address the Homeless Outreach and Support Team (HOST) may be able to help you find accommodation and access other support. For more information contact the Housing Advice Centre. Click How to Contact Us  for opening times and contact details.
